MOULTRIE – After she was honored before the game for becoming just the 10th 1,000-point Lady Packers scorer, Amareyia Knighton connected on her first shot against Westover on Friday.
And it was a long 3-pointer that helped propel the Colquitt County girls to a 52-33 victory, their sixth-straight to open the 2024-2025 season.
“I think that ceremony gave her some ammunition,” said Lady Packers coach Stephanie Cody, who has been instrumental in Knighton’s development the last four years and is enjoying her pupil’s success.
Knighton reached the 1,000-point plateau in Colquitt’s 66-27 victory over Leon High on Nov. 26, in the second game of season-opening Charles Cooper Invitational at Lowndes.
Against Westover on Friday on the William Bryant Court, she added another first-quarter 3-pointer and a short-range jumper in the third quarter for eight points.
She now has 1,029 career points as the Lady Packers prepare to travel to Dougherty on Tuesday.
The Lady Packers had little trouble with Westover, leading 34-9 at the half and 45-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
“We moved the ball around well and made the necessary passes,” Cody said of her first Lady Packers team.
“I keep telling the girls ‘One day at a time.’ We want to build our own house, brick by brick.”
The Lady Packers were led by Amira Walters-Smith who had 20 and raised her average to 19.3 points a game in the early going.
The all-state senior had 15 points in the first half, including three 3-pointers. She added another from beyond the arc in the third quarter.
The Lady Packers also got a strong performance from Nacardia Robinson, who had 19 points.
The 5-foot-9 sophomore forward scored in each quarter and had 11 points at the half. She hit three of her four free throws.
Caylnn Singletary added three points and Azaria Battle had a third-quarter basket.
The Westover girls fall to 2-3.
