MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie Junior Woman’s Club recently announced the April Mentor of the Month: Susan McCranie.

After retiring from her position as school nutrition director in the Thomasville City School System, McCranie devoted her time to community endeavors including the Moultrie Federated Guild, the Friends of Library, and the Board of Directors for the Hero House, according to a press release from the club.

“McCranie’s involvement with the YMCA mentoring program began by a chance meeting nine years ago,” the club said. “While her Sunday school class was helping with kindergarten Christmas parties at Stringfellow Elementary School, McCranie met an adorable little boy. The paraprofessional told her that he was in need of a mentor, and directed her to the YMCA Mentor Program.”

McCranie has followed this young man to different schools through his educational journey. He is now a seventh grader at Willie J. Williams Middle School.

Through the years, they have covered countless subjects and practiced many life skills, the club said, but she has felt it a satisfying accomplishment to see her mentee develop a love for books. His current favorites are Christmas stories and the Chronicles of Narnia.
