MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie golf cart driver’s attempt to lose chasing police didn’t work on Saturday night. Officers ran him down after he tried his luck on foot after striking a curb.
In a second incident a man who reportedly was acting belligerently and using vulgar language toward officers tried to ride away on a riding mower.
Both men were arrested.
At about 10:07 p.m. an officer spotted Sammie Demetrius Hill driving a red golf cart with no headlights approaching a traffic light at West Central Avenue. When the light turned green, police said, Hill turned and drove north into Northwest Moultrie.
When the officer told Hill to pull over he indicated that he would do so a short distance ahead. Instead, police said, Hill reversed his direction of travel, turned “abruptly” onto First Avenue Northwest and “continued at a rapid pace.”
When the officer caught up to the golf cart, Hill hit a curb while trying to turn into a driveway, police said. He ran but two officers caught him after a brief chase.
Hill, 55, 1431 Sumner Road, was charged with driving while license withdrawn, duty to obey police officer and driving without headlights when required.
Shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday police responded to a Moultrie Housing Authority complex in the 800 block of Eighth Avenue Northwest to a report of an unwanted guest.
When they arrived, a man later identified as Robert Lee Aikens IV came outside and immediately began using vulgar language toward officers and told them not to approach him, police said. As the officer walked toward him Aikens got on a lawn mower and tried to crank it in an attempt to drive it away.
When an officer tried to remove the key from the lawn mower, Aikens slapped his hand and arm, police said. At that point officers grabbed both of Aikens’ arms and handcuffed him, but Aikens continued to “be loud and belligerent the entire time.” He also told officers multiple times that he was a “sovereign citizen.”
Rosetta Drew told police that when Aikens, who is her son, knocked on the door she let him as she was getting ready for Easter morning church services. Aikens began making demands such as wanting to take a shower putting food from her kitchen in his pockets.
He refused to leave, Drew told police, and began using vulgar language and being disorderly.
Aikens IV, 36, 214 11th Ave. S.E., was charged with disorderly conduct.
