MOULTRIE, Ga. — A call about a late-night knock on a woman’s door resulted in police recovering a car and pistol reported stolen in Mitchell County and arresting a suspect.
Moultrie police were dispatched at about 5:47 a.m. to the residence of Shacholeyen Key in the 900 block of Sixth Street Northwest. The first officer to arrive in the area noticed a 2014 Nissan Altima with damage around the passenger-side headlight parked “awkwardly” on the roadside with a man sitting inside.

When the officer turned around to check out the damaged car, the man got outside of it and started walking south on Sixth Street and then went around a corner.
The officer then checked with Key, who was OK but just wanted to report the incident. She told police that she did not know the person who was knocking.
After police determined that the Nissan was stolen and arranged to have it removed by a wrecker, the first officer noticed the man he had seen earlier peek over a fence. Other officers returned to the area, located the man and chased him down.
Police took Lavernell Lorenzo Lamons, 24, 6050 S. Pine Street, Coolidge, into custody. While searching Lamons prior to arrest, police said, an officer found a gun on him that also was reported stolen in Mitchell County.
The case remains under investigation.
