THOMASVILLE — During a two-hour predawn period Wednesday, thieves were unusually active in the East Washington Street area and on nearby East Jackson Street, according to police.
Close to 7 a.m. Wednesday, a Washington Place resident discovered her Ford Edge had been stolen. Keys were left in the vehicle, which was unlocked. The Edge was recovered later Wednesday morning behind an apartment complex on East Washington.
A few minutes later, an East Washington resident told police someone broke a window on his locked 2017 Nissan Altima and took $50 from the console.
A little later, a Washington Place resident reported a semiautomatic 9mm Taurus PT III G2 pistol and a black holster were missing from his vehicle. The firearm has been entered in the Georgia Crime Information Center as stolen.
A sledgehammer was stolen from another vehicle on Washington Place.
Two other vehicles were entered between 2 and 4 a.m. Wednesday on East Washington. Contents were pilfered.
A vehicle parked at a business on nearby East Jackson was locked, but that did not stop thieves.
“They burst a window out and stole some electronics out of it,” said Maj. Maurice Holmes, Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division commander. “The others they were obviously going through looking for unlocked doors.”
Police have no suspects. A recent crime spree involved juveniles, but police do not know who is responsible for the crimes committed this week.
Police Chief Troy Rich urges residents to leave no valuables in plain sight in vehicles, to lock vehicles and to remove the key from the ignition.
Evidence gathered from the recovered stolen vehicle is being analyzed, Holmes said.
