Dalton firefighters were sent to the high school at 1600 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at about 3:20 Monday morning after smoke alarms went off. They found the smoke alarms had been set off by fire extinguishers being set off. The firefighters called police to investigate.
Officers found several hallways sprayed with fire extinguisher foam. Basketball jerseys and sweatpants were taken from the gym, and food had apparently been stolen from the concession stand area, police said.
Officers found footprints in the foam that led out of a back door, where they found one of the fire extinguishers.
“Officers were able to follow a trail of footprints, discarded fire extinguishers and areas where fire extinguishers had been sprayed to the area of Beechland Circle,” the department said in the press release. “There, officers found a trail of footprints left in the fresh dew on the grass to the back of a vacant apartment unit at 1600 Underwood St., a rare example of southern humidity being helpful.”
Officers searched the vacant apartment and found four men hiding in a closet. The officers realized they were the individuals involved in the break-in and arrested them.
The basketball jerseys and sweatpants were found and returned to the school.
More arrests are possible, police said.
