CAIRO — Solar panels are still a rising topic for Grady County.

On Tuesday, May 2, the Grady County Board of Commissioners approved enacting a brief moratorium on permits for solar panel farms.

The moratorium is in effect until the next commissioners meeting on May 16.

The commissioners previously enacted a 60-day moratorium in February, which has expired.

The same motion, made by Commissioner LaFaye Copeland, also included reissuing a permit to a solar panel farm in the process of being built near Highway 112.

The new facility will be grandfathered into the ordinance’s regulations once an ordinance is enacted.

The facility started the permit process prior to the commissioners beginning the process for an ordinance for solar panel farms.

The Grady commissioners will conduct a public hearing regarding solar panel farms on May 16, at 6 p.m..

County Attorney Kevin Cauley presented a draft ordinance to the commissioners in April. Grady commissioners also conducted two workshops regarding solar panel farms in March.
