MOULTRIE — Police don’t think a Moultrie woman was the target of a barrage of Sunday morning gunfire from multiple weapons, but her house and car apparently were behind the intended victim.

No injuries were reported from the gunfire, which residents in the area heard at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday but was not reported until Sarah Clayton noticed damage to her residence in the 400 block of Ninth Street Northwest. She called police at around noon Sunday, Moultrie Police Department Sgt. Justin Lindsay said.

“Multiple shell casings were found (near) a path near a vacant house,” he said. “The house was hit multiple times. A vehicle outside was hit multiple times.”

Two different types of shell casings were found in the area, indicating more than one gun was fired, police said, but they did not reveal the specific calibers of the weapons involved.

Lindsay does not think that the shooter or shooters were intentionally firing at Clayton’s residence.

“It looks like they were shooting at somebody else and her house just happened to be in the way,” Lindsay said.
