- Crime alert.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — For the second time in as many weeks, a convenience store in Baldwin County has been broken into and items stolen.
The latest such crime happened early Monday at the Quik-Fill, located at 140 Old River Ridge Road near Kings Road, according to Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Greg See.
It happened shortly before 2 a.m., according to the video surveillance at the store, he said.
Like was the case last week at the store on Roberson Mill Road in Milledgeville, as well as the break-ins of stores in neighboring Wilkinson County, all four intruders that entered the Quik-Fill store had their heads and faces covered during the break-in, See said.
The detective said intruders attempted to break out the glass in a front door with a piece of concrete. When that didn’t work, they kicked the glass out to gain entry.
“They were in the store less than two minutes and gone by the time deputies got there,” See said.
The burglars stole several loose packs of Newport cigarettes, as well as a small display case of costume jewelry.
“They opened both cash registers, but didn’t get any cash because there was no cash in the drawers,” See said.
As of Monday afternoon, the investigation was ongoing.
A store was broken into last week on Roberson Mill Road. The intruders had their heads and faces covered when they broke in and stole an undisclosed amount of cash, loose packages of cigarettes, lottery tickets and candy.
The same was thing happened last week in neighboring Wilkinson County. Two stores there were burglarized and intruders attempted to break into another store in Gordon. The burglary attempt in Gordon, however, was unsuccessful and led to a manhunt for four suspects.
Although the manhunt failed to turn up the suspects, it did lead to the discovery of a rental car and the subsequent arrest of a Macon man in connection with last week’s break-ins.
Meanwhile, See believes multiple groups of four individuals are hitting stores in central Georgia.
“The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently working a case in regards to a group known as All About the Money Gang,” See said.
They used a similar motive of operation to commit break-ins of stores, he added.
“I do not know whether our burglaries are tied to that specific investigation, however, the same [mode of operation] is being used,” See said, noting it was his understanding that the GBI is currently working some 25 suspected connected store break-ins.
