Colquitt County wrestling returns under Scarbor

Nic Jarvis, Colquitt County High junior wrestler, is the only returning region champion from last season.

MOULTRIE – The call is out. Colquitt County High student-athletes looking for something new to learn when they are done on the gridiron – or anything else this fall – are welcome to try their hand at grappling.

The Packer wrestling season will soon begin for 2017-18 with November duals at Ware County, Cook High, Collins Hill and Etowah High. The program is now under the direction of Benji Scarbor, formerly Valdosta High’s wrestling coach who moved over to Moultrie in May.

It’s the first week of official practice for wrestling at the ‘wrestling room’ behind the old high school. On Thursday, 22 were in attendance listening to Scarbor’s instructions. He will add to that number whenever football winds down as one of his team captains is senior Packer running back Tyler McKinnon.

McKinnon is in fact only one of three seniors Scarbor has on the roster. Another with experience is Victor Castanon at 152 pounds. Castanon is also a captain.

The other captain is 220-pound junior Nic Jarvis. He is the team leader in wins, pinfalls and is the only Packer back on the mat who was a region champion (defeating Camden County’s 220 by major decision) and state placer last season.

This weekend, Jarvis is going to the Super 32 Challenge in Greensboro, N.C. (it can be seen live on flowrestling.com). Scarbor said numerous college scouts attend this tournament, and that Jarvis does have interest in wrestling at the next level.

Still looking to fill weight classes, Scarbor’s main message is any middle school athlete who will finish football on Saturday or any high schooler who wants to wrestle, contact him at the high school to arrange for a physical and get on the team.
