MEIGS — Tyaire Herring wants to bring Meigs back to what it was when she was a child.
Herring, a native of the small Thomas County town, is seeking the mayor’s seat in the Nov. 7 election.
“I want to get Meigs back as it once was,” Herring said. “That’s where my heart is.”
Herring’s platform includes getting the town’s recreation department up and running, bringing in a program like “Meals on Wheels” for the elderly, and getting the Meigs Police Department “full-force, up and running.”
“I also want to get a grocery store,” Herring added, recalling a grocery store was available while growing up in Meigs.
Her main focus: Meigs’ barren downtown.
“It’s deserted,” Herring said. “The buildings are not the buildings I remember.”
The mayor-hopeful recalled the now-deteriorating downtown bustling with grocery stores, restaurants, and a dentist and doctor’s office.
“We need that back,” she said.
Along with addressing the city’s downtown, Herring also wants to address division within Meigs and bring unity.
“When you divide, things fall apart,” she said.
In order to get people to do something, Herring said, “you have to do something.”
“You’ve got to start with you for change,” Herring added.
If elected, Herring also plans to address issues among the Meigs City Council.
“We’re not there for personal (issues), we’re there to get the job done, get the town up and running again,” she said.
Herring added, “Every one of them (council members) will have a job they’re responsible for.”
If not elected, Herring plans to remain active in the Meigs community.
“I’m going to do what I said my plans were,” she said.
