Kiwanis looking to partner with city on pavilion for annual fundraiser

DALTON, Ga. — Since 1953, the Kiwanis Club of Dalton’s annual Pancake Day has been the chief fundraiser for the charities the club supports. And the big tent on the Dalton Green where the Kiwanians cook and serve the pancakes has become a familiar sight each fall.
But club officials are looking for something a little more permanent and asked City Council members if they are interested in partnering with them during the council’s work session Monday night.

“We have funding for a pavilion, and we just wanted to see if there was any interest from the city and to get the ball rolling,” said Kiwanis Club member Kathy Schleier.
Schleier said the club is interested in partnering with the city to build a pavilion at the corner of Thornton Avenue and Waugh Street at the site of the old City Park School. The club would use it each fall for its Pancake Day and it would be available to other groups throughout the year.
Council members said they are interested in the idea and asked Kiwanis Club members to get together with the Public Works Department and the Parks and Recreation Department to develop a formal plan to bring back before the council.
“I’m very excited about the proposal,” said council member Gary Crews. “It’s important that we give it to Public Works and to Parks and Rec to see if we can come up with a proposal that will serve them well and serve the city well and work in concert with all of the events that we have on the Dalton Green. It’s a great idea. I hope we can work out the details.”
T.J. Kaikobad, owner of Cyra’s restaurant and chairman of the Downtown Dalton Development Authority, said he is “excited” by the proposal.
“It could provide a great outdoor/indoor combination facility for all sorts of events,” he said. “For days when we have inclement weather, we could hold the downtown farmers market there.”
