Matt Hamilton/Daily Citizen-NewsThe Dalton City Council may vote soon to ratify a judge's decision to declare the former Econo Lodge site a public nuisance.

DALTON, Ga. — It looks like it is just a matter of time before the Dalton City Council ratifies a judge’s decision to declare the former Econo Lodge site at 2007 Tampico Way a public nuisance.

Council members tabled a vote on the matter when the council met last month at the request of City Attorney Jim Bisson. Mayor Dennis Mock says he isn’t sure exactly what Bisson’s concerns were but they were more procedural than substantive. Mock said when council members have a chance to talk to Bisson and clarify his concerns they will place the measure on the agenda of a future meeting.

Court filings included in the council’s agenda indicate the property is unsafe, has high weeds and is the site of criminal activity.

According to Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier the property was closed completely on Feb. 24, 2014.

“But the southernmost building closed in 2011 after it was struck by lightning,” he said.

The police department handles code enforcement for the city.

“Since completely closing in 2014 DPD has taken 27 reports at this location. Those have ranged from trespassing, burglary, drugs and code violations, only three were code related,” Frazier said.

In court filings, the property’s owner is listed as Parag Barot of Fort Oglethorpe. According to the police department, he was the long-time manager of the hotel, and the owner of the property is Nick Sheth of Atlanta. Phone numbers for Barot and Sheth could not be found. The attorney who represented the property owners in court did not return a telephone message.
