The firearm used in the incident, a 9mm, was stolen Wednesday from a vehicle on East Clay Street.

Police responded a few minutes after 8 p.m. Saturday to 311 E. Monroe St. and were told the boy had been shot, said Capt. Maurice Holmes, commander of the Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.

Family members at the house took the injured boy to Archbold Memorial Hospital before police arrived. The victim was later taken to the Tallahassee hospital.

Holmes said the boy was shot once in the forehead.

“He was basically playing with the gun and pulled the trigger,” Holmes said, referring to the suspect, who is being held at the Loftiss Regional Youth Detention Center.

The suspect is charged with reckless conduct, theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a minor.

The suspect was arrested about 11:45 a.m. Sunday at a relative’s house in Thomasville. The firearm used in the shooting was recovered at the house, the commander said.

“He tried to run, but family members held him,” Holmes said.

Juveniles who witnessed the shooting are being interviewed by police.
