OSHA investigates death at Shaw plant

DALTON, Ga. — The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation into the death of a worker at Shaw Industries’ Abutment Road Plant 23 Monday night.  “OSHA has up to six months from when it begins an investigation to issue its final report and issue citations, if any,” said Eric R. Lucero, with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Public Affairs. “However, it does not necessarily mean OSHA will take that long to finish the inspection.” Lucero says OSHA’s policy is not to issue any preliminary or interim reports before its final report. Jose Pimentel, 51, died around 9 p.m. after he “apparently got caught in a piece of machinery” at the plant, Dalton Police Department spokesman Bruce Frazier said. Frazier said Tuesday morning the death was accidental and the police department was not investigating. Whitfield County Coroner Greg Bates said Pimentel died after getting caught between a moving part of the machine and a stationary steel I-beam. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Pimentel’s obituary, he leaves behind a wife and three daughters.
