MOULTRIE – Randy Smith won by technical fall in Colquitt County’s final match to give the Packers the championship in the Tift County Duals on Saturday in Tifton.
Colquitt had won its first four duals convincingly over Cook B, Howard High of Macon, Parkview and Tift County.
But the Packers were trailing 37-33 to Cook’s A team in the finals and were down to their last match when Smith took to the mat.
Colquitt needed five points to claim first place and that’s exactly what the veteran senior provided with his technical fall win in his match at 144 pounds.
“It was a great dual match,” Colquitt County coach Benjy Scarbor said of match against Cook. “Back and fourth matches, very fun to be part of.”
The duals competition included four pools of four teams each.
Colquitt had little trouble beating Cook B 77-6, Howard 79-0 and Parkview 67-12.
The Packers, Tift County, Valdosta and Cook emerged as the pool champions.
Cook then defeated Valdosta and the Packers won event host Tift County 50-16.
In the championship match, the Packers had their hands full until Smith came up with the big win.
Colquitt County also sent six of its girls and 22 of its junior varsity wrestlers to compete last Friday in Tift County’s Blue Devil Brawl.
London Coleman at 100 pounds and Lesly Tercero at 170 turned in second-place finishes for the Lady Packers.
Aileen Martinez finished third at 135.
