On keeping our electoral system a viable one

Applause to those who embraced the very essence of our democratic system and won posts, or at least made it to the next round, of countywide elections. But let us also express appreciation for all of those who tossed their hats into the ring.

Without people willing to offer their services, our system of a democratic republic would atrophy. It would wither on the vine.

Seeking public office requires a lot of soul searching, time and energy. And it’s more than just the commitment of an individual but a particular resolve of that candidate’s family as well.

Serving the public requires much sacrifice from the one who claims the post as well as his or her family. There will be meals missed, schedules altered, continuous phone calls and constantly being in the eye of the constituents.

As well, we applaud those who turned out to vote. We often hear about voter apathy in our country which is an extreme irony given that we so often showcase our form of government as the way it should be done. In some instances, we have even tried to implant our political ideologies in other countries. Apathy is a problem.

And we still have many who say their votes don’t count and some who are just too lazy to make themselves aware of the issues and candidates and make a choice.

So for those who do take their roles as voters seriously, please note that you are helping uphold and perpetuate a system that many people in other lands only dream about.

Now we head toward November and our general election when we will choose a president as well as local leaders. If you have not registered to vote, please consider being a part of our great system. In the meantime, study the candidates and the issues.

Also keep in mind the ultimate sacrifices that have been made down through the years so that we can continue to makes these choices. Some of their names are listed on that monument on the courthouse square. Sons and daughters.
