Violence

Moultrie Police

• Moultrie police responded to a report of an assault just after 10:30 p.m. Monday at Best Little Store in Georgia, 619 W. Central Ave.

Just before 2 a.m. Tuesday, the same officer was dispatched to the area of Fourth Street Apartments, 100 block Fourth Street Southwest, about an unknown person outside the caller’s window. When he arrived, he saw a man who fit the description of the aggressor in the earlier incident. The man approached the officer’s patrol car and started talking about the altercation at the store.

The officer turned on his car and body camera recorders and asked the man his name and date of birth, which he said were Quozel Grant, born Feb. 14, 1975. The officer exited his patrol car and told Grant he was under arrest in connection with the fight at the store.

As the officer tried to put handcuffs on him, the suspect pulled his arm away and walked to the neighboring yard.

“The whole time he was walking away from me, he kept putting up his hands as in preparing to fight me,” the officer reported. “Quozel kept pulling up his shorts and stating, ‘How are we going to do this?’”

The officer called for back-up. The suspect started to walk away, and the officer warned him to stop or he would tase him. After another warning, the officer fired his Taser and hit the suspect in the back.

Grant fell to the ground and the officer put handcuffs on him. Another officer arrived at that point.

After he had time to recover, the second officer escorted the suspect to the patrol car, where he was searched. Officers found a wallet with an identification card that said “Quozel Grant” was actually Quinton Garrett with a date of birth of Feb. 12, 1975. A computer check found no warrants for him, and no contraband was found on him, police said.

Garrett was charged with simple battery, criminal trespass and obstruction of an officer.

• In an unrelated incident at Best Little Store in Georgia, a patroling police officer saw a large group in the parking lot yelling about 10:42 p.m. Friday. Two men were in a physical altercation, he said. When the officer got out of his car, the two combatants left through the back of the store.

The officer was unable to make contact with the combatants, and during his investigation he couldn’t find anyone who had seen where they came from or knew their names.
