Hidden Heroes Clayton

Willie Fred Clayton is the recipient of one of the Hidden Heroes awards for Georgia Schools.

MOULTRIE – The Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement has honored Willie Fred Clayton as one of its nine Hidden Heroes. He is an ESOL social studies and science teacher at C.A. Gray Junior High School.

About Hidden Heroes

The Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement is a statewide education leadership nonprofit. This month, it celebrates the nine top vote-getters of its Fifth Annual Hidden Heroes campaign. This is an annual honor that illuminates difference-makers in education, the institute said in a press release.

“Too often young people are not encouraged to pursue a career in education. Yet education is the profession that makes all other professions possible, and is a tremendously fulfilling way to make a difference in the lives of young people. With over 165,000 page views of nominees’ stories, we are so proud of how this campaign engaged communities statewide to elevate and celebrate all the professionals who make school — and a bright future of economic, social and civic prosperity — possible,” said Leslie Hazle Bussey, Ph.D., CEO and executive director of GLISI.

Altogether, the institute received nominations for 130 education professionals from the three regions, North, South and Metro. It chose three winners from each region.

Nominees ranged from paraprofessionals, school social workers, coaches, teachers, federal programs directors, nutrition directors, custodians, principals and superintendents. Their communities and colleagues nominated them not only for their everyday acts of service and professional excellence but for their deep care for students and education.

About Willie Fred Clayton

The community nominated Clayton multiple times, describing him as a “dedicated and passionate educator who gives everything to his students,” the institute said.

Originally from Thomasville, he transitioned from a career in professional basketball abroad to education. He started teaching at Willie J. Williams Middle School in the 7th grade social studies department. He has coached middle and high school basketball. Also, he was a Gentleman’s Club advisor and a member of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Team. After four years at the middle school, he is now teaching at C.A. Gray Jr High School.

The nomination also describes him as, “an example of hope for the future of education” and “genuinely a difference maker in the lives of his students.”

“His unwavering love and passion for his students are truly inspiring. … Willie never waits to be asked for help or encouragement; he offers support without hesitation. He never seeks recognition or a ‘thank you’ for his efforts,” was also stated.

Also in the South Region, the other winners include Marlon Lawrence, custodian at Mary Lee Clark Elementary School from Camden County, and Mike Coe, head football coach at Coffee High School from Coffee County.

Hidden Heroes receive

The Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement will award cash prizes to each of the Hidden Heroes and their nominators. Then, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s Eggs and Issues breakfast on Jan. 14, 2025, will celebrate the winners.
