Five Brooks County jailers arrested

- Several members of the staff of the Brooks County Jail were arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Tuesday.
QuITMAN — Five jail officers in Brooks County were charged with felonies related to cruelty to inmates Tuesday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
On Sept. 16, the GBI Thomasville Office was asked by Brooks County Sheriff Mike Dewey to initiate a criminal investigation regarding a use of force incident against an inmate in the Brooks County Jail, according to a GBI press release.

During interviews with jail staff, inmates and other witnesses, the GBI learned additional incidents had taken place involving inmates and staff, according to the press release. The other incidents took place in March, April, May and September 2016; the latter date initiated the investigation, the GBI said.
The following are charged, according to the GBI:
• Jail Administrator Scott Boutwell, age 49: three counts cruelty to inmates, felony; one count violation of oath of office, felony; and one count of simple battery, misdemeanor;
• Jailer Courtney Giddens, 29: two counts cruelty to inmates, felony;
• Jailer Rina Griffin, 29: one count cruelty to inmates, felony;
• Jailer Dellisa Brown, 26: one count cruelty to inmates, felony:

• Jailer Jorqua Davis 27; two counts cruelty to inmates, felony.
The five were scheduled to appear before Superior Court Judge Brian McDaniel Tuesday afternoon at the county jail.
