MOULTRIE, Ga. — “Nobody in Colquitt County has to drive drunk,” John Warner of Warner Towing and Recovery said Thursday.

Warner was refering to his company’s plan to offer free transportation and free tows to “people and vehicles that have overindulged” during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

This is the fourth year Warner Recovery has partnered with MADD-South Georgia to help keep tipsy travelers off the roads. Warner said last year they aided 38 people.

Gary Robinson of MADD-South Georgia said traffic fatalities are up about 4 percent across the state from last year: 1,478 deaths so far this year compared to 1,432 in all of 2015. He cited state statistics saying about 25 percent of those deadly crashes are caused by impaired drivers.

“We ask that everyone slow down, wear your seat belt, get a designated driver, and put the cell phone down!” Robinson said.

In addition to the free tows, Warner Recovery is showing its appreciation for law enforcement, first responders, and jail and prison personnel by providing Boston butt dinners on New Year’s. Last year they fed 200 people, Warner said, including officers in smaller municipalities.

“We try to not leave anybody out … We even took them to Coolidge (Police Department) last year,” Warner said.
