Shumate to speak at Mother Easter Missionary Day

MOULTRIE — The Missionary Society of the Mother Easter Baptist Church will hold its annual Missionary Day program at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 15. The theme is “Solidarity with the Savior through Our Witness,” and the speaker will be Angela Shumate.
Born in Dawson, Ga., she is the daughter of George and Bertha Williams of Dawson. She is married to Abraham Shumate and has one son, Austin, a daughter, Ariel, a stepdaughter, LaPorsha, and a goddaughter, Asia. She is the daughter-in-law of Willard and Martha Fulmore of Albany.
She attended and received her elementary and high school education in the Terrell County Public School System. Shumate graduated from high school in 1986. She furthered her education and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Early Childhood Education from Albany State University. In 1997, she received her Educational Specialist Degree in Elementary Education from Troy State University in Phenix City, Ala. She became certified in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Albany State University in March 2002. Shumate received a Specialist degree in Educational Leadership and completed all requirements for her Doctoral Degree from Argosy University in Sarasota, Fla., in March 2006.
In August 1991, the Dougherty County School System employed Shumate as a teacher at Morningside Elementary School where she taught 2nd grade for 11years. In 2002, she became the assistant principal of Northside Elementary School where she served 2 years. She then became the principal of Northside and served in that capacity for 7 years. She served two years as the principal of Albany High School. She is now the principal of Lamar Reese Magnet School of the Arts.
Shumate is a member of the Beta Omega Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated and a Life member of the Albany State University National Alumni Association. She is spiritually connected with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Albany, Georgia under the leadership of the Rev. Daniel Simmons where she serves as an ordained minister and a daughter of Zion.
She plays the character of “Willie Mae” in the dynamic stage play “The Measure of a Man,” featuring actors Demond Wilson (Lamont Sanford from “Sanford & Son”), Carl Anthony Payne (Cockroach/Cole from “Martin,” “The Cosby Show” and “The Game”), Dennis White (Damion “D-Roc” Butler from Biggy Small’s movie “Notorious” and “Law & Order: SVU”), and T.C Starling and Matt Hardwick from the movie “Courageous.” This play was written, directed and produced by Matt Hardwick.
Betty Johnson serves as the president of the Missionary Society which is made up of six circles: the J.B. Lewis Circle, the Jean Sailor Circle, the Eula Willis Circle, the Eva Roney Circle, the Evelyn Kendrick Circle, and the Burla Harrington Circle. The Rev. Freddie Castle is the pastor of Mother Easter, located at 1400 W. Central Ave. The Missionary Society welcomes the public to this annual event.
