Moose Lodge offers scholarship program

The Moultrie Moose Lodge is trying to drum up interest in a scholarship program sponsored by Moose International.

Frank Perry, spokesman for the Moultrie Club, said Colquitt County has never had a student take part in the Moose Youth Awareness Program, which offers five one-time scholarships, the largest of which is $12,000.

A brochure Perry provided said the Moose ask high schools across North America to recommend two students to attend Association Student Congresses, which are held in October and November each year.

Between the congress and Feb. 28 of the following year, the attendees must make a presentation to three groups of 4- to 9-year-olds. The brochure recommends elementary schools, Sunday school classes, scouting groups, etc.

The student can choose his or her own topic. Perry said “Don’t Do Drugs” is the most popular.

Each year, about 60 students — all of whom have completed their three “MooseTalks” — are chosen by their peers to attend the International Youth Awareness Congress. During that event, five students will be selected by their peers for the scholarships.

Students need not have any connection to the Moose Lodge to participate, Perry said.
