MOULTRIE — John Benning Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolutions will participate in National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 14 joining with 4,000 locations nationwide and 26 American cemeteries abroad to honor the memory of veterans.
The wreath laying ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at Cobb Suncrest Memorial Garden of Valor, located on Ga. Hwy. 37 West.
DAR is seeking volunteers to assist in laying more than 500 wreaths on veterans’ graves at Suncrest and other cemeteries in South Georgia. This is the seventh year this event has been held in Moultrie and sponsored by the John Benning Chapter.
As a part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, this year’s ceremony will be a tribute to Vietnam veterans. According to Jessica Perdew, DAR’s WAA chair, this year all of the veterans placing ceremonial wreaths will be Vietnam veterans representing each branch of service.
Ceremonial wreaths will also be placed at the Eternal Flame War Memorial on the Colquitt County Courthouse Square by members of the Thigpen Trail Society Children of the American Revolution. Representatives from the Thigpen Trail Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will also be assisting with the distribution of the wreaths.
Once the military service wreaths have been placed, volunteers will be invited to assist in placing wreaths on the veterans’ graves in the Garden of Valor. Donors who purchased wreaths to be placed on a grave in a location other than Cobb must pick up the wreaths after the ceremony on Dec. 14. All wreaths should be picked up by noon.
Wreaths Across America is a national organization with the mission of “Remember. Honor. Teach.” What started as a way to honor veterans buried at Arlington National Ceremony has grown to encompass 2.7 million wreaths annually at over 4,000 locations.
DAR is a national women’s service organization with the mission of history, education and patriotism. Service for veterans and support of active military are two of its main projects.
