MOULTRIE — On April 29, the senior Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) from Moultrie Technical College’s (MTC) Veterans Parkway Campus presented personalized care packages to the Cross Roads Gospel Rescue Mission in Moultrie.
The presentation of these care packages was the capstone event of a semester long, student led community outreach assignment. The class chose this project in part because of the Florence Nightingale pledge, an oath required by all nurses, that “calls to care” those in the profession. Nightingale is regarded as the founder of modern nursing and established guidelines still utilized by contemporary nursing professionals.
Lorie Barrow and Ruth Crockett, LPN Instructors at MTC said in a joint statement “It is essential for our community to have functional therapeutic items, and the MTC VPC LPN class chose this project because of those community ties. There are currently eight residents that the class will provide clothing, personal hygiene products, and gift cards for them to use to purchase food and other essentials. The class and MTC as a whole want to do our part to show there are people who care, and hope this small object of gratitude will set them on a new path in life.”
Cross Roads Gospel Rescue Mission is a Christian based short-term help facility for area homeless and needy. According to their website, the Crossroad Gospel Rescue Mission is a non-denominational local ministry focused on providing Christ-centered physical, mental, and spiritual comfort to those in need.
The Practical Nursing program is a 5-semester diploma program designed to prepare students to write the NCLEX-PN for licensure as practical nurses. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing care. This is done through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to give competent care. A variety of clinical experiences is planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor.
