MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County girls presented new head basketball coach Stephanie Cody with a 42-28 win over Thomas County Central on Monday in her first game as team’s head coach.
The Lady Packers top assistant coach for the last 14 seasons, Cody took over the team this year and saw three of her players score in double-digits in the 14-point win over the Lady Jackets.
Her win came in the Lady Packers first game in the Charles Cooper Invitational at Lowndes High.
Colquitt, now 1-0, will meet Leon High at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Lady Packers were led by senior Amareyia Knighton, who also is a key player for Colquitt County 16-6 flag footall team.
Knighton had 13 points against the Lady Jackets and needs just 12 more to reach 1,000 points in her outstanding career.
Returning all-state shooting guard Amira Walker-Smith had 12 points, including nine on three 3-pointers.
Sophomore Nacardia Robinson added 10.
Also for the Lady Packers, Caylnn Singletary had three and Ta’Meria Williams and Kamya Thomas each added a basket.
The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter, but it was all Colquitt County the rest of the way.
The Lady Packers outscored Central 19-10 in the final two quarters.
Singletary and Knighton each added a 3-pointer in the game, but one key was the Lady Packers’ 9-for-12 effort from the foul line.
Knighton hit all six of her free throws.
The Lady Jackets leading scorer was Jaden Crews, who had 11 points on three 3-pointers and a pair of fourth-quarter free throws.
The Central girls took a 1-2 record into their Tuesday early afternoon game against Lincoln High of Tallahassee, also in the Charles Cooper Invitational.
The Lady Packers will make their home debut on Friday, Dec. 6, when Cairo visits to play at 6 p.m. on the William Bryant Court.
The Colquitt girls also will play host to Dougherty on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tipoff again will be at 6 p.m.
