MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County eighth-grade girls basketball team remains undefeated after a middle school sweep of Thomas County on Monday at the C.A. Gray Junior High gymnasium.
The eighth-graders won 55-23 to raise their record to 8-0 and 6-0 in region play.
The seventh-grade Lady Packers started the sweep with a 46-9 win in the first game.
Colquitt County eighth-grade girls coach Kim Taylor said her team played a solid game.
“Making our free throws, creating turnovers on defense and sharing the basketball on offense has been our focus,” she said. “I saw a lot more of that.”
She added, “Big minutes from our bench has been key to our success as well. I think we are headed in the right direction.”
The eighth-graders got a basket and two free throws from Addison Wiley in the first minute to take a 4-0 lead and never trailed.
Tnyha Young scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the first two quarters and the Lady Packer led 29-10 at the half.
Wiley added 14 points; Kyndall Pettis had nine; Dee Tillman and Kaniyah Brown each had four; and Chelsey Bonner and Dyi James each had two.
Thomas County scored the first basket in each of the first three quarters of the seventh-grade game, but the Lady Packers were in control the rest of the way.
“We played hard on defense and shared the ball well,” coach Jon Scroggins said.
“D’Kyra Jones initiated the defense and found open shooters all night. Makairi James played great defense on the back end and rebounded well.”
Mea Rodriguez led the Lady Packers with 19 points. Jones added 15.
Caitlyn Singletary and Laila Myrick each had four and James and Ruby Demott each contributed a basket.
The seventh- and eighth-grade teams will return to the C.A. Gray gymnasium at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, to play host to Coffee Middle School.
