Lindsey and Matthew Goss — grandchildren of Bobby and Janice Goss, Truman and Lynn Wilson, all of Moultrie, and the late Buddy McCoy — have accomplished what few siblings can claim. Both were honored recently for achieving the highest honor offered by Scouting.
Matthew received the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout award, and Lindsey received the comparable Girl Scouts Gold Award in a joint ceremony Sunday, June 22, at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in their hometown of Springfield, Va.
For his Eagle Scout project, Matthew designed and coordinated renovation of the walking trail at Hidden Pond Nature Center in Springfield, making the trail safely accessible for strollers and citizens with disabilities. Matthew is the 143rd Eagle Scout for Troop 1140. This highest honor was earned by only 6 percent of Boy Scouts in 2013.
For her Gold Award project, Lindsay authored “Re-Founding America,” a book about significant historical figures from American history focusing on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). She led several sessions with elementary grade ESOL students as they read and discussed the book. Lindsey is one of the very few Gold Award recipients for Troop 656. This highest honor in Girl Scouts is earned by only 5 percent of Girl Scouts.
Both Lindsey and Matthew were congratulated by Virginia House of Delegates Delegate David Albo, who presented each of them a Virginia state flag that was flown over the state capital in their honor. Lindsey also received a state flag from her birth state of Montana that was flown over the state capital on her birthday. Matthew received a state flag from his birth state of Hawaii that was flown over the state capital on his birthday.
Matthew is a rising senior at West Springfield High School. Lindsey will be a freshman at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the fall. Their parents are Lane and Debbie Goss of Springfield, Va.
