Sumner gets two pins as wrestling Pack wins twice

Hart Sumner raised his record to 24-6 with a pair of pins in Colquitt County’s victories over Pelham and Thomas County Central on Tuesday at the Pineland gymnasium.

Hart Sumner pinned both of his opponents on Tuesday as the Colquitt County wrestling team defeated Pelham and Thomas County Central at the Pineland gymnasium to raise his season record to 24-6 and his career record to 92-63 as he prepares to be honored on Friday at Senior Night.

Sumner and Javier Martinez will be two the two Packer seniors honored on Friday at Colquitt County plays host to Americus-Sumter County and Monroe in the final home matches of the season. Wrestling will begin at 5 p.m.

The other Packer seniors to be honored will be Elijah Gomez, Artrevious Palmore and Sam Palmore.

Martinez was awarded a forfeit victory against Thomas County Central at 182 pounds on Tuesday, but appears out for the season after suffering a knee injury at the recent region duals.

He now has 99 career victories and is 21-4 with 13 pins this season.

“I really hate it for him that that happened,” said coach Travis Torbert. “He’s a good guy.”

Both Sumner and Martinez are four-year varsity wrestlers.

Martinez wrestled at 171 as a freshman and posted a 17-21 record and finishing fourth in the region tournament

As a sophomore, he wrestled at 170 and 182 and posted a 31-13 record and was third in the region tournament at 170. Last year, at 195, he was 30-18 and was sixth at the region tournament.

Sumner wrestled at 125 as a freshman and was 15-24.

Wrestling at 126 pounds as a sophomore, he went 22-15 and was fourth in the region tournament.

Last season, he went 31-18 and was fourth in the region tournament at 132.

The Packers defeated Pelham 47-30 and Thomas County Central 45-27 on Tuesday to raise their season record to 23-10.

Savonte Wilson, wrestling at 120, also was 2-0 on Tuesday, getting a forfeit against Pelham and winny by a pin against Central..

Hudson May ran his record to 27-2 with his 20th pin of the season in his 152-pound bout against Thomas County Central.

Brother Garrett May, wrestling at 170, also won by a pin against the Yellow Jackets and raised his record to 25-4. He also has 20 pins.

Also getting wins for the Packers on Tuesday were Miguel Carranza, 113, a pin against Central; Hayden Suggs, 126, forfeit against Pelham; Tyson McCray, 132, pin over Central; Javarious Madison, 132, forfeit against Pelham;  Jorge Martinez, 145; pin against Central; Frank Clark, 152, 23-8 technical decision against Pelham; Shelby Barnett, 160, 4-2 decision against Central; Tyler Robinson, 195, pin vs. the Hornets; and Daniel Brinson, 220, pin vs. Pelham.
