- Bonny Lewis.
A manhunt for a suspect in a Jan. 10 slaying ended Tuesday afternoon when he turned himself in to authorities.
Bonny Lee Lewis, 31, showed up at the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 1 p.m., where he was booked on one count of murder in the slaying of Danny Hill.
Lewis had previous drug arrests but had no history of charges related to violence. At the time of his latest arrest, he faced a retrial on a cocaine charge. The Colquitt County District Attorney’s office was not immediately able to say what the status is for a possible retrial.
In June 2013 Lewis was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute along with two other men after police were called to investigate a report of a disturbance in the 900 block of Ninth Street Southeast. That arrest was unrelated to the case in which jurors deadlocked.
Danny D. Hill, 23, the man Lewis is accused of killing, was found dead in the 800 block of Eighth Street Southeast on the evening of Jan. 10.
The Colquitt County Coroner’s Office said that Hill had been shot in the head and the death classified as a homicide.
Known on the streets as “White Boy,” Hill also had a history of drug arrests, and on Feb. 1, 2013, fatally shot a man in what police described as a robbery attempt on Hill in which he was stabbed multiple times. That shooting was ruled self-defense.
In the wake of Hill’s death two other men were struck by bullets, neither fatally, over the next five days.
Since Wednesday of last week there have been no other reported shootings.
Moultrie Police Chief Frank Lang requested last week the assistance of the FBI Gang Task Force for the Southern Judicial District, and those officers have helped police maintain a heavy presence of law enforcement on the streets.
As a result of extra officers patrolling, a number of people have been arrested on charges unrelated to the fatal shooting, including probation violation, failure to obey police and giving false names to officers.
A man wanted on drunk-driving charges in Illinois and a Columbus woman wanted on an aggravated assault charge in Worth County were among those arrested by officers on patrol over the weekend.
As of Tuesday, there was no additional information to report, said Steve Turner, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation office in Thomasville.
The GBI is taking the lead role in the investigation of Hill’s shooting.
Turner said that no weapon has been found and that he could not comment on whether additional people could be charged in this specific case.
“There is always the possibility of charging others,” he said.
