MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County baseball team closed out the regular season with a win and a tie at Pike County on Friday.
The Packers now will take a 16-13-1 record into its state tournament-opening doubleheader at Walton on Wednesday.
First pitch in the first game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Game 2 will follow.
If a deciding game in the three-game series is necessary, it would start at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
In their final seven regular-season games, the Packers have gone 5-1-1.
After scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat Pike County 8-1 in Friday’s first game, Colquitt rallied to tie the second game with two runs in the top of the seventh.
After a two-run single by freshman Cohen Lawson knotted the game at 5-5, the Packers had the go-ahead run on third with just one out.
But a double play ended the rally.
The Pirates did not bat in the bottom of the seventh and the game was declared a tie.
The Packers, who used a number of younger players in the game, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
One run scored on a ground out and the other on a single by Tyson Hobby.
Pike County, a Class AA school located in Zebulon, then scored three in the third and another in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
Colquitt cut the Pirates lead to a run when Carter Summerlin stroked a one-out double in the fifth.
Hayden Hembree replaced Summerlin as a courtesy runner and scored on a double by freshman Chase Enfinger.
It was Enfinger’s second double of the game.
Pike added another run in the bottom of the sixth before Colquitt rallied for the tie.
Lawson led the Packers nine-hit attack with three hits.
Summerlin, Tyson Hobby, Tyson Samples and Bowen DeRosso had the other hits.
DeRosso started the game on the mound in what was his final outing before his likely start in Game 1 on Wednesday against Walton.
The sophomore right-hander gave up three runs and four hits in 2.1 innings.
DeRosso will take a 5-2 record and a 3.50 ERA into the postseason.
In the first game, the Packers got an outstanding performance by Bryce Roberts, their other sophomore right-hander.
Roberts went all seven innings, gave up seven hits and just one unearned run in the first inning. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The versatile Roberts, who also has started at both second base and third base this season, will take a 3-2 record and a 1.67 ERA into the playoffs.
He has made 13 appearances on the mound, including four starts.
The Packers also had nine hits in the first game, including two each by Summerlin and Adam Beverly.
Brady DeRosso had a double and Enfinger, Hembree, Roberts and Cook Tompkins added singles.
Six of the seven runs the Packers scored in the sixth inning came with two outs. Hembree had a two-out single that gave the Packers a 5-1 lead.
The Packers played the final three games of the season without the services of leading hitter Jake Walker.
The senior first baseman is nursing a sore leg. He is batting .397 and also leads the team with 10 doubles.
Rylan Howell is hitting .358.
Roberts has scored a team-leading 25 runs and is hitting .346.
Summerlin has driven in a team-leading 23 runs and has four doubles, two triples and two home runs.
Senior shortstop Adam Beverly leads the team with 32 hits, including four doubles, and is hitting .327. He also has driven in 19 runs.
