Colquitt splits with Richmond Hill, finishes third in the region

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County baseball team needed to sweep its home doubleheader with Richmond Hill on Friday to claim second place in Region 1-6A.
But the Packers dropped the first game 4-1 to finish third in the region and will have to travel for their first-round state tournament series.
The Packers did complete their region schedule on a high note when senior Cook Tompkins threw a 2-hit shutout in the Packers 3-0 win in Friday’s nightcap.
Colquitt’s second-game win also dropped Richmond Hill to fourth place.
The Wildcats will travel to meet Region 5 champion Etowah in the first round.
Colquitt and Tift County finished the region season with identical 10-5 records, but the Blue Devils won their region series 2-1 over the Packers to claim second place.
Lowndes won the region championship.
The first-round playoff opponents for Tift County, Colquitt County and Richmond Hill will be determined next week.
Camden County, which lost all 15 region games, and Valdosta did not qualify for the postseason.
The state baseball playoffs will start April 23-24.
Colquitt, now 13-13 overall, will play a non-region game against Cook at 6 p.m. Monday at Packer Park.
