MOULTRIE – Popular former Colquitt County football player and assistant coach Quin Roberson is rejoining the Packers staff.
Head coach Sean Calhoun announced two other staff changes on Monday and said several more will be made public after the April 28 Colquitt County School Board meeting.
The staff should be close to being complete by April 29, the first day of spring practice.
Also on Monday, Calhoun said Jeremy Rowell, the Packers defensive coordinator the last three seasons, is leaving to take the same position at Veterans High in Houston County.
Stan Luttrell, who has headed the weight-training program and coached linebackers the last three seasons, will take over the defensive coordinator duties.
Roberson was the first Packer to have 100 career pass receptions, having reached that total as a senior in 2009.
Those catches were good for 1,537 yards and 13 touchdowns.
His most productive season came in 2008, when he had 58 pass receptions for 911 yards and eight touchdowns. Against Coffee in 2009, he caught passes good for 146 yards.
He started his collegiate career at Samford in 2010 and was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week in the Bulldogs’ 19-7 win over Northwestern State in which he had six catches for 124 yards.
Roberson transferred to Valdosta State in 2011.
That season, he had 31 pass receptions for 382 yards and six touchdowns and had 17 punt returns for 219 yards, including one that he took back 81 yards for a touchdown.
In 2012, he was on the Valdosta State team that won the Division II National Championship.
Roberson graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2018 with a degree in history.
He began his coaching career at Ocoee High School in Florida, where he was on the staff from 2018-2020.
He moved back to Georgia to coach the receivers at Thomas County Central in 2021 and then returned to his high school alma mater in 2022.
After coaching the Packers receivers for two seasons, he left to become the offensive coordinator at Westlake High in Atlanta.
“We are super pumped to have Quin back,” Calhoun said.
Rowell has had two stints as a Colquitt County assistant coach.
He served under Rush Propst for three years and was the Packers defensive coordinator in 2015 when the team went 15-0 and won its second-straight state championship.
After coaching at Georgia Southern from 2016-2021, Rowell returned to Moultrie to join Calhoun’s first Colquitt County staff.
The 1991 Crestview (Fla.) graduate played quarterback at Troy University.
He had been an assistant coach at Troy for 16 seasons before joining the Colquitt County staff in 2013.
Veterans High will be playing under new head coach Steve Devoursney this season.
The Region 2-5A Warhawks were 1-9 under Joel Ingram last year.
Calhoun said that Rowell’s departure was a family decision.
“He is a good friend and I was not disgruntled at all with him,” Calhoun said.
Luttrell joined the Packers staff in 2022 after having been the head football coach at Hebron Christian Academy the two previous seasons.
Luttrell, who has been a head coach in Georgia for 16 years and was an assistant at Buford for four years, is also an international coach with USA Weightlifting.
Coaches of other sports at Colquitt County have credited Luttrell with helping improve the strength of their athletes.
While taking on a more prominent role with the Packers, Luttrell is not expected to cut back on his strength and conditioning work with Colquitt County’s athletes.
“He won’t get too far away from the weight room,” Calhoun said.
He is the father of former Packer defensive back and punt return specialist Jack Luttrell, who is now playing at Arizona.
The Packers’ 10 days of spring practice will conclude with the annual spring game at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at Coffee High.
Colquitt County’s preseason scrimmage will be held on Thursday, August 7, at Bainbridge.
The 2025 season-opener is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 15, against Savannah’s Benedictine Military School on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
