MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County girls tennis team defeated Lowndes in its match of Tuesday’s Region 1-6A tournament in Valdosta to earn a home match in the state tournament.
The Lady Packers fell to Camden County in the region tournament championship game, but the second-place finishes means at least one more match at Packer Park.
The Colquitt girls are expected to meet Marietta, the No. 3 team from Region 5, in the first round.
The date has not been set.
In Tuesday’s match against Lowndes, the Lady Packers singles players all won in the 3-2 victory.
Julia Costin won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2; Emily Lampman won at No. 2 singles by the same scores; and freshman Allie Rowley won at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-0.
The No. 1 doubles team of Jayley Johnson and Ada Craft fell 2-6, 2-6.
At No. 2 doubles, Jaelyn Wier and Laura Gonzales lost 0-6, 1-6.
Against Camden County, Costin lost 0-6, 0-6; Rowley fell 3-6, 2-6; and Lampman lost 2-6, 1-6, against a strong Camden County team that finished undefeated in the region.
“I’m extremely proud of the girls,” coach Amber Day said. “They battle back from entering as the No. 3 seed to clinch second and host next week.”
The Colquitt County boys went into the region tournament as the No. 4 seed and lost 0-3 to top-seeded Tift County.
Tift won at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and at No. 1 doubles.
The Packers finished No. 3 in the region and will travel to Woodstock to meet Region 5 runner-up Etowah in the first round of the state tournament.
