MOULTRIE — U.S. Marshals arrested a suspect Friday in a March 14 shooting that left a Moultrie woman hospitalized.

Donavan Harris of Moultrie was found at the house of an acquaintance in St. Petersburg, Florida, Moultrie Police Chief Chad Castleberry told The Observer Wednesday.

The Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office said Harris was expected to be transferred here from the Pinellas County Jail that same day.

Castleberry said Harris shot Marissa Jones, of Moultrie, while she was driving a car and he was the passenger.

The shooting happened at around 4:05 p.m. March 14 at the intersection of Northside Drive and Sixth Street Northwest.

According to Facebook posts from her family members, Jones is recovering from shots to her face, neck and thigh.

Castleberry said the MPD pulled in all of its officers and went door-to-door looking for Harris the evening of the shooting. He said the suspect didn’t really have a house that he lived in. He was living from house-to-house and sometimes stayed in abandoned houses. Then, he fled to Florida.

Colquitt County Sheriff’s Deputy Officers Thomas Moore and Justin Searcy, both task force officers with the US Marshall’s Office, were instrumental in his capture, in Florida, said Castleberry.

Castleberry said Harris was charged with possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm by a convicted felon in the act of committing a felony.

“He’s no stranger to the system,” said Castleberry.

Harris was incarcerated Dec. 14, 2021, in Dooly State Prison, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He served time for the possession of a firearm during commission of a crime and robbery by force. He was released Aug. 12, 2024.
