MOULTRIE – Junior Michael Hall shot a 2-under par 70 to lead the Colquitt County boys golf team to a 301 and a third-place finish in Saturday’s Packer Invitational.
Led by low medalist JD Culbreth and Moultrie’s Austin Baker, Brookwood School of Thomasville took first place with a 284.
Lowndes was second, turning in a 290 in the annual event held at Sunset Country Club.
The Invitational drew 118 players representing 24 schools.
Colquitt County’s all-underclassmen team also counted a 72 from sophomore Reese Hood, a 79 from sophomore Leighton Hood and an 80 from freshman Cavin Hall.
Sophomore Jacob Rowell shot an 87.
“Michael is a great player and played up to his usual game,” Packers coach Andrew Eunice said of the older of the team’s two Hall brothers.
Michael’s 70 earned him a berth on the all-tournament team.
“Reese had a great round going, but had a very unlucky break on 18 to double for his 72,” Eunice said.
“He played good enough for a 69 or 70.”
Eunice thinks his team’s best rounds are still ahead of them.
“We still haven’t played as good as we can,” he said. “But it’s going to hit at the right time and we’re going to go super low.”
Colquitt entered two teams in the tournament, with the B-team shooting a 352 to finish 16th.
Sophomore Dawson Lane led the Packers second team with an 80. Fellow sophomore Peyton Collins shot an 82.
Freshmen Jace Davis and Brayden Nolan each shot a 95.
Culbreth is no stranger to the Sunset course.
He has been the low medalist at the Pot o’ Gold Pro-am the last two years playing for Bill Connally’s Glen Arven Country Club team.
Mason Howell, another member of Connally’s Pot o’ Gold foursome, shot a 72 for Brookwood on Saturday.
Culbreth and Howell are both heading to Georgia to begin their collegiate careers.
Baker, a sophomore who lives in Colquitt County, had Brookwood’s second-best score on Saturday, a 70 that also put him on the all-tournament team.
Shooting 69 on Saturday was Trace Carter of Ware County and freshman Camden Yager of Lowndes.
Carter will play collegiately at Georgia Southern.
Ben Holland of Alabama’s Smiths Station High and Mason Pate of Lowndes each shot 71.
Smiths Station finished fourth with a 317, 16 shots back of the Packers.
Rounding out the top 10 were Ware County, fifth, with a 320; Pierce County, sixth, 322; Camden County, seventh, 326; Tift County, eighth, 331; Hillgrove, ninth, 335; and Banks County, 10th, 337.
Following Banks County were Toombs County, 344; Parkview, 345; Whitefield Academy, 347; Lee County, 349; Altoona, 353; Bainbridge, 355; Oconee County, 356; Worth County, 361; Dodge County, 364; Seminole County, 373; Atlanta’s Weber School, 375; and Charlton County, 399.
The Packers will compete next in the Blue Devil Invitational on Monday, April 7, at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton.
The tournament was originally scheduled for March 24, but was rescheduled because of storms.
