8th-grade soccer teams
reach championship games

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County eighth-grade boys and girls soccer teams have qualified for next week’s conference championship games.
And each has an added incentive.
Coach Matthew Burton’s boys will aim to remain unbeaten when they play Pine Grove on Wednesday, March 26, at Packer Park.
The eighth-grade girls, under coach Jessica Anaya, will be out to avenge their only defeat and take down the only team that has scored against them this season when they travel to Thomasville on the same day to face Thomas County Central at 5 p.m.
The eighth-grade boys advanced to the championship game with a 4-0 semifinal win over Thomas County Central on Wednesday at Packer Park.
Hudson Champion scored the only goal the Packers would need with 18:30 left in the first half. Jose Mayorga got the assist.
With 4:20 left in the half, Brandon Mata scored the first of his two goals to put the Packers up 2-0. Mayorga again got the assist.
Daniel Perez gave the Packers a 3-0 lead with a goal with 26:20 left in the match. Ivan Pimentel assisted.
Mata’s second goal closed out the scoring. It was unassisted.
The Colquitt boys will take a 10-0 record into the championship match.
Among those 10 victories was a 3-0 shutout of Pine Grove back on February 5, at Packer Park.
The eighth-grade girls shut out their first seven opponents before dropping their regular-season finale 3-1 at Thomas County Central.
The Lady Packers got back on track and blanked both of of their conference tournament foes: Tift County, 10-0, in the first round, and Pine Grove, 4-0, in Wednesday’s semifinal at Packer Park.
Four different players scored for the Lady Packers on Wednesday: Emily Garcia, on an assist from Dyi James; Maya Meza, with an assist from Emily Garcia; Iris Crisostomo, with an assist from Mia Cedillo; and Kayla Garcia, with the assist going to Josie Crisostomo.
The team’s keepers had seven saves: three by Ansley Eure and four by Julia Brown.
