MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County baseball team let a 3-0 first-inning lead slip away in a 10-5 loss to Chiles High on Thursday on Ike Aultman Field at Jerry Croft Stadium.
The Packers, now 3-5, will try to get in the win column when they play host to Buchholz High of Gainesville, Fla., at 1 p.m. Saturday at Packer Park.
Only four of the 10 runs surrendered by Cook Tompkins, Cole Holder and Owen Bennett over the first five innings were earned.
Freshman Owen Avery pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits and a walk, but no runs.
The four Packer pitchers gave up just seven hits – five in the first inning and and two in the seventh.
But the Packers were charged with four errors.
Colquitt scored all three first-inning runs on a two-out double by Jake Walker.
The three runners who scored for the Packers had reached on bases on balls.
The Timberwolves run in the top of the second came on a passed ball. An error figured in the three-run third inning that gave Chiles the lead.
The Timberwolves scored four runs in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Two errors, two walks and a hit batsman contributed to the damage.
The Packers other two runs scored on a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Carter Summerlin in the bottom of the fourth.
Carter Penuel had reached on an infield hit before Summerlin’s blast.
But Chiles countered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to keep the lead at five runs.
Colquitt did not score over the final three innings.
In addition to Summerlin’s homer and Walker’s double, the Packers got a triple from Bowen DeRosso and singles from Penuel, Brady DeRosso and Adam Beverly.
The victory evened the Timberwolves record at 4-4.
The Packers will open Region 1-6A play with a single game at Camden County next Tuesday and a double header on Friday, March 7, at Packer Park.
