Steptoe throws 6 no-hit innings;
Griffin hits walk-off home run

MOULTRIE – Former Colquitt County left-hander Gavin Steptoe pitched six innings of no-hit baseball in Thomas University’s 7-0 win over Trinity Baptist College on Tuesday.
That same day, at Packer Park, Gage Griffin hit a walk-off three-run homer to give the Colquitt County middle school A-team a 9-7 victory over Pine Grove.
Steptoe did not allow a run or a hit while striking out six Eagles over the first six innings of the second game of a doubleheader at Varnedoe Stadium in Thomasville.
Brandon Steele struck out the side in the seventh inning to complete the no-hitter.
The victory gave the Thomas University a split of the doubleheader with the Eagles and raised their record to 4-12.
Steptoe is now 1-0 for the Night Hawks this season.
At Packer Park, Pine Grove had scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
But after the first two Colquitt County batters were retired in the bottom of the inning, Noah Burkett and Jaden Chambers reached on base hits.
Griffin then homered over the center field fence to give the Packers the victory that raised their record to 3-7.
Jackson Lasseter also had a big game for the A-team with three doubles.
Chambers had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Griffin’s homer was his second hit of the day.
Burkett, Drake Saunders and Cole Stanford also had hits for the Packers.
The middle school A-team will be back in action on Thursday, February 27 when it plays host to Valdosta at 4 p.m.
• The Colquitt County sub-varsity B-team also won on Tuesday, defeating North Florida Christian 11-10 in Tallahassee,
The Packers scored three runs in the first inning, seven more in the second and another in the third to go up 11-0.
NFC bounced back to score four runs in the bottom of the third and six in the fourth to pull to within a run.
But Judson Taylor held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to get the save.
Jaxson Dorminey had four hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Packers.
Jackson Edwards had three hits and an RBI.
Davis Wingate and Briar Littleton each had two hits and Eli Hobbs, Tyson Samples, Owen Avery and Chase Enfinger each had two.
Samples and Avery each had a double and Wingate, Samples and Enfinger drove in two runs apiece.
The B-team will travel to Lee County on Friday.

• Colquitt County golfer Davis Hall shot a 78-76 to finish third in the 12-13 age division at the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour’s Sea Island Junior Classic last weekend.
