MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County boys soccer team, ranked No. 6 in Class 6A by Score Atlanta, remained undefeated after a 4-2 win over Valdosta on Tuesday at Packer Park.
The Packers, 3-0 overall, will put their 1-0 Region 1-6A record on the line quickly as Tift County is scheduled to visit Packer Park on Friday.
The Blue Devils are 1-1, having defeated Cook 4-0 on Tuesday and dropping their region opener to Richmond Hill 7-0 last week.
Colquitt dominated the first half in the win over Valdosta and got what coach Colby Simpson termed two “quality” goals.
Christian Nunez scored the first goal with Romeo Lopez assisting.
Turner Brice McDaniel also scored in the first half with Cason Haskin getting the assist.
He said his team’s passing was crisp and connected well.
Colquitt scored twice in the second half, once on a penalty kick by Jessie Guerrero and on a free kick, with McDaniel assisting Guerrero.
Valdosta scored its two goals with less than a minute remaining in the contest.
Colquitt County’s Golden Girls put a disappointing non-region loss to Thomas County Central behind them and pounded the Valdosta girls 10-0.
“Every game is important, but region games are what really matter,” coach Carlos Bautista said. “We have to win every single region game by as much as possible in case it comes down to goal differential.
“We play in a very tight region, it is very possible for two or three teams to have the same win and loss record. In that case, it comes down to goal differential, goals scored versus goals allowed. We must score every opportunity and have a clean sheet by the end of the game.”
Jennifer Cano scored four goals for the Lady Packers against Valdosta. Jaida Gachuz and Jackie Choc each scored two and Jenedi Leon and Vashti Camacho each scored once.
Valdosta is coached by Andres Ramos, who spent some time as an assistant with the Packers program. He and Bautista worked together on the Colquitt County staff.
“It’s always good to see him and catch up with him,” Bautista said. “While our teams do play each other and while we want to beat each other, we do maintain a good friendship.”
The Lady Packers will try to go 2-0 in the region when they play host to Tift County at 6 p.m. Friday.
The Lady Devils are 1-1, with a 4-0 win over Cook and an 8-0 loss in Richmond Hill in a region contest.
