Huante, two relay teams
qualify for state swim meet

MOULTRIE – Individual qualifier Hannah Huante will be joined by two girls relay teams in representing Colquitt County at the GHSA Class 6A state swim meet.
Huante, who also is a member of the two state-qualifying relay teams, will compete at state in three individual events: the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Colquitt County swimming coach Andy Chapura said a decision has not been made yet about which two events she will compete in at the state meet.
Huante finished second in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke at the Region 1-6A meet that was held Monday at the Okefenokee Aquatic Club in Waycross.
The state meet will be held Feb. 7-8, at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
The 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams of Hannah Bryant, Gracie Strickland, Cindy Jo Cooper and Huante also qualified for state on Monday.
The freestyle relay team finished fourth in the region meet with a state-qualifying time of 1:52.28.
The medley relay team was fifth with its state-qualifying 2:05.45.
Richmond Hill won the region overall team championship with 385 points.
Tift County was second with 338 points and was followed by Camden County, 179 points; Valdosta, 48 points; Colquitt County, 44 points; and Lowndes, 22 points.
Tift County won its 12th straight girls region title.
Richmond Hill was first and Camden County second in the boys team scores, ending a string of 10 straight Tift County region boys titles.
Colquitt County was represented by nine girls and one boy at the region meet.
Bryant earned seven team points with her fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and her sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle event.
Ella Rose Briones scored two points for her seventh-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
Cooper’s eighth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle added a point to Colquitt County’s team score.
Jacob Medders was the only Colquitt County male to compete and he earned two points for finishing seventh in the 100-yard backstroke.
Also competing in the region meet for Colquitt County were Daelyn Greeson, Emmie Conn, Lydia Jones and Leila Hall.
