Lady Packers defeat Bainbridge

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County girls basketball team never trailed in its 54-37 win over Bainbridge on Saturday on the William Bryant Court.
But coach Stephanie Cody is still concerned about what has become a recurring problem for her 12-3 team.
The Lady Packers are not rebounding as well as she would like and the lack of consistency on the boards could hurt her girls down the Region 1-6A stretch.
“We have got to box out better to get to where we want to be,” she said. “We are not going to get taller overnight.
“We have got to out-work people. You just can’t give the other team three and four chances.”
The Lady Cats, who lost to Colquitt County 36-30 in Bainbridge last month, often had multiple chances, especially on the offensive end, to keep the game close.
But they managed just five points in the first quarter and the best quarter offensively came in the third when they got two 3-pointers each from Aleah Jones and Taliyah Ausgood.
But when they were unable to make a run, the Lady Packers firepower put them away.
Amira Walters-Smith scored a game-high 21 points, including 15 on five 3-pointers.
The game was the eighth this season in which the All-State guard has scored 20 or more points.
Amareyia Knighton had four 3-pointers on her way to 16 points.
Nacardia Robinson added 10, five in each half.
Caylnn Singletary had the Lady Packers 10th 3-pointer and Ta’Meria Williams and Kamya Thomas each had two points.
The Lady Packers will put their 1-2 region record on the line when play host to Valdosta on Tuesday.
On Friday, January 17, the Lady Packers will travel to Tift County for their first meeting this season with the Lady Devils.
