LEESBURG – The Colquitt County girls basketball team defeated Lee County on Thursday to in Leesburg raise its record to 8-0.
But that perfect record will be tested when the Lady Packers meet Lowndes at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the second night of the Lee County Girls Showcase.
The Vikettes also won their first game in the Showcase on Thursday, defeating Veterans High to set up the early-season matchup against longtime region opponents.
The Lowndes girls, who won the region last year, will take a 9-1 record to the Lee County court on Friday.
Colquitt ran into early foul trouble against Lee on Thursday, but a season-high 29 points by senior guard Amira Walters-Smith helped the Lady Packers remain unbeaten.
Walters-Smith had just two 3-pointers, but was able to penetrate the Lee County for layups and floating jumpers.
She also hit 9-of-11 free throws and is now averaging 21.1 points a game.
Caylnn Singletary added seven points.
After scoring 25 against Dougherty on Tuesday, Amareyia Knighton was held to six points.
Ta’Meria Williams, Azaria Battle and Nacardia Robinson had three.
“She’s been scoring and rebounding real well for us,” coach Stephanie Cody said of Robinson, her sophomore inside player.
“But she got into foul trouble quickly. But we are eight deep.”
The 7-0 Colquitt County boys will play Dougherty at 4 p.m. Friday and Monroe at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the U Save It Classic at Monroe High in Albany.
