MOULTRIE – Amareyia Knighton and Caylnn Singletary have managed to become outstanding two-sport players at Colquitt County High.
And both of those sports begin in the fall.
Knighton and Singletary start for the flag football and basketball teams and have juggled both for the last three weeks or so.
And while they are just seven games into the Lady Packers basketball season, they have already helped lead the flag football team to an 18-7 record and a berth in the state quarterfinals.
And their play for coach Kirk Woodall’s flag football Lady Packers has been exemplary enough that they have earned statewide recognition.
Score Atlanta has named Knighton as its All-Classification Defensive Player of the Year.
She also has been selected to play in the Georgia Athletic Association’s all-star game on December 20.
And Singletary’s state-leading 21 interceptions have earned her a berth as a cornerback on the All-Classification All-State team.
The two have been starters on the first two Colquitt County flag football teams that have gone a combined 29-8-1.
This year’s team went 18-7 and won the Division 4 Area 1 championship.
Knighton was a big part of the Lady Packers success both offensively and defensively as her size, speed and athleticism have been on full display.
But she was particularly dominant in stopping opposing offenses with her flag-pulling prowess from the linebacker position.
She headed into the state quarterfinal game at Grayson having been credited with 147 tackles, including eight sacks.
Knighton also intercepted seven passes.
And while it was her defensive play that was recognized, she was a force offensively as well.
She caught 41 passes for 433 yards and five touchdowns this season as the Lady Packers headed to Grayson.
Woodall said she has a full scholarship offer to play collegiate flag football.
“She is an amazing player,” Woodall said. “And she is an amazing person.”
And while anchoring the Lady Packers’ flag team’s defense, she also was becoming just the 10th basketball player to reach 1,000 career points.
A four-year starter in basketball, Knighton reached that plateau in the Lady Packers victory over Leon High of Tallahassee on Nov. 26.
And although she has been slowed somewhat by an illness, she still has managed to score 79 points for the 7-0 Lady Packers, including a season-high 25 against Dougherty on Tuesday.
She also is considering play basketball at the next level.
While Singletary’s ability in the Colquitt County secondary earned her a place on the All-State team, she, too, was a big part of the Lady Packers offense.
She rushed for more than 500 yards and was third on the team in receiving.
The quickness she displayed on the flag football gridiron is also being put to good use for the Lady Packers basketball team.
She is averaging more than five points, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals a game.
While their senior flag football season is over, Knighton and Singletary will continue to lead the Lady Packers basketball team, starting with Thursday’s game against Lee County in Leesburg.
