MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County basketball teams should be well-rested – and well-pleased – as they prepare for their Friday, Dec. 6, home-openers.
The Lady Packers and Packers are both 2-0 as they get ready to play host to Cairo in their first games on the William Bryant Court.
Both teams swept their two games in the Charles Cooper Invitational on Nov. 25-26 at Lowndes.
Playing their first game under new head coach – and long- time assistant – Stephanie Cody, the Colquitt County girls breezed past Thomas County Central, winning 42-28, and Leon of Tallahassee, taking down the Lady Lions 66-27.
Against Leon, Amareyia Knighton became just the 10th Colquitt County girls player to reach 1,000 career points when she scored 20.
She will take 1,008 career points into Friday’s game against the Syrupmaids.
Knighton scored 33 points in the Lady Packers two victories.
All-State shooting guard Amira Walters-Smith, who averaged 17.0 points a game last season, has 32 in the first two games.
Sophomore post player Nacaria Robinson also has been in double-digits in the first two games, scoring 10 against the Lady Jackets and 11 against Leon.
Friday’s game against Cairo, scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m., will be the season-opener for the Syrupmaids.
Colquitt’s girls will be back on their home court again on Saturday to meet Dougherty as part of the South Georgia vs. Middle Georgia Classic. That game, too, will start at 6 p.m.
The Colquitt County boys team is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2016-2017 season when the Packers won their first 10 games in a row.
This season, the Packers opened with a 59-49 victory over Leon in the Charles Cooper Invitational, with Cason Harden putting in 22 points and Marcus Moore scoring nine.
In the 45-44 win over Rickards on Tuesday, Moore scored 15 and Harden added 11.
The Colquitt boys, who lost their first five games in a row last season en route to a 6-23 record, will try to go to 3-0 when they meet the Syrupmakers on Friday.
At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Packers will play host to Rutland High of Macon in the final game of the South Georgia vs. Middle Georgia Classic on the William Bryant Court.
The Hurricanes, who play in Region 2-AA, are off to a 1-1 start.
The two games featuring the Colquitt County teams will be the final contests in the six-game Classic.
The event will begin at noon with the girls teams from Lee County and Wilcox County squaring off.
At 1:30 p.m., the boys teams from Crisp County and Cairo will face off.
The 3 p.m. game will pit the Worth County boys vs. their counterparts from Southwest Macon.
At 4:30 p.m. the Valdosta boys will play the Houston County boys.
