North Gwinnett, Lee County still chasing state championships

MOULTRIE – Two Colquitt County regular-season opponents are still chasing state championships.
North Gwinnett and Lee County advanced last week to quarterfinal games on Friday.
The Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 6A, defeated Newton 24-10 to get to 12-0, but must go on the road to play at No. 2 Buford on Friday.
Lee County, pounded East Paulding 63-14 and will be undefeated for its Class 5A quarterfinal meeting with 11-1 Sprayberry.
The Trojans, who defeated the Packers 47-35 back on Sept. 13 at the Hawg Pen, are averaging 54.4 points per game.
Of this and that:
• Defending champion Thomas County Central, whose only loss is to Lee County, knocked off Rome 35-7 last week and will travel to Hughes on Friday.
• Worth County, under coach Jeff Hammond, defeated Dodge County 63-23 last Friday and will be home to face a familiar foe in a Class A, Division I quarterfinal.
Fitzgerald, which dealt 9-3 Worth its last defeat by a 28-21 score back on Sept. 2, will head to Sylvester on Friday.
• Former Packer Kaleb Dawson intercepted two passes for Alabama A&M in its 49-35 win over Mississippi Valley State last week.
Dawson also had two solo and three assisted tackles.
The two interceptions give Dawson three over the last two games.
Alabama A&M, now 6-5, will travel to Tallahassee to meet Florida A&M on Friday.
• West Alabama’s season came to an end with a 37-34 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne last Saturday in the first round of the Division II playoffs.
Former Packer Tyler Walker gave West Alabama a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he hauled in a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Spencer Arceneaux.
Walker finished the game with seven catches for 85 yards.
He had 39 catches for 454 yards and five touchdowns for West Alabama this season and 60 receptions for 825 yards and seven scores over the last two years.
• Jack Luttrell pulled down his third interception of the season in Arizona’s 49-28 loss to TCU last Saturday.
He also had a pair of tackles in the game.
Luttrell also had two interceptions against Colorado earlier in the season.
The Wildcats, who are not bowl eligible, will conclude their season with a game against Arizona State on Saturday.
• Former Packer Cole Holmes has performed well at center for Thomas University this season.
• Tyshon Reed Jr., had 10 total tackles, including two for losses and a sack in Duke’s 31-28 victory over Virginia Tech last week.
He also was credited with a forced fumble.
Duke, now 8-3, will play at Wake Forest on Saturday.
• Carson-Newman was eliminated in the first round of the Division II playoffs last Saturday, falling at Miles 14-13.
South Atlantic Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year Turk Daniels made his 12th straight start in the game for Carson-Newman.
• Former Packer Kamal Bonner started at linebacker for North Carolina State in its loss to Georgia Tech last Thursday.
Bonner had six total tackles, including one for a loss for the 5-6 Wolfpack, who will conclude its season on Saturday at North Carolina.
Omar Daniels had three solo hits and one assisted tackle for Georgia Tech against N.C. State.
Now 7-4, Tech will travel to Athens on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Georgia.
• Minnesota fell 26-25 to Penn State on Saturday and drops to 6-5.
The Golden Gophers will meet Wisconsin at 11 a.m. Friday.
Le’Meke Brockington had a pass reception for Minnesota against Penn State.
• For the second year in a row, Florida State University kicker Ryan Fitzgerald has been named as a finalist for the coveted Lou Groza Collegiate Place-kicker Award, honoring the nation’s top collegiate kicker.
The three finalists will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The winner will be announced on Dec. 12.
Fitzgerald kicked a 25-yard field goal and made all four of his extra point attempts in the Seminoles 41-7 win over Charleston Southern last Saturday.
Florida State is 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the ACC.
