Colquitt flag football team clinches area championship

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County flag football team clinched the Division 4 Area 1 championship on Wednesday when it shut out Baker County and Valdosta in games played at Lowndes.
The Lady Packers, now 15-5 overall and 6-0 in the area, have area contests on Tuesday, Nov. 19, against Thomas County Central at 5:15 p.m. and Valdosta at 6:30 p.m. at Baker County to close out the regular season.
Colquitt, which has scored 344 points while allowing just 166 in its 20 games, will open the playoffs at home on Dec. 5.
The Lady Packers have shut out eight of their 20 opponents.
The Wednesday wins were the fourth and fifth in a row since the Lady Packers dropped three straight games in the Southeast Bulloch tournament on Oct. 26.
In the first game on Wednesday, the Lady Packers blanked Baker County 33-0 with three players scoring their first varsity touchdowns.
Carolina Brown scored on a 14-yard pass from Taylor Huewitt; Candi Tercero reached the end zone on a 1-yard run; and Ta’Ayona Singletary picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown,
Amareyia Knighton scored on a 66-yard run and Ta’Meria Williams scored on a 50-yard run.
Huewitt completed 3-of-6 passes for 44 yards and the scoring throw to Brown. Caylnn Singletary had two pass receptions for 30 yards.
The Lady Packers rolled up 142 yards on the ground on just 11 carries.
In addition to Singletary’s pick-six, freshman Lydia Allegood came down with two interceptions and Caylnn Singletary had another.
Baker County falls to 0-10.
Against Valdosta, which drops to 2-8, the Lady Packers got two touchdown runs by quarterback Mashayla Davis and another by Caylnn Singletary.
Davis also completed 9-of-18 passes for 82 yards.
Knighton caught four passes for 22 yards; Williams had three for 53 yards; and Ta’Ayona Singletary caught two for seven yards.
Knighton led the defense against the Lady Cats with nine tackles.
