High school, middle school divers excel in first meets of the season

MOULTRIE – Six Colquitt County divers competed in the season-opening Classic City Invitational in Athens last weekend and all turned in scores that qualified them for the state meet.
The Georgia High School Association’s state meet is scheduled for Feb. 4, at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta.
Trip Gregory and Judson Taylor finished first and second in the boys 1-meter event.
Gregory turned in a 280.55. Taylor had a 239.75.
Colquitt County took the top four places, led by Elizabeth Hobby, who scored a 264.40.
Jewel Hart was second with a 260.45, just 3.95 points behind Hobby.
Kendall Deloach, a student at Charlie A. Gray Junior High, was third with a 258.75.
Finishing fourth was Maggie Strange with a score of 238.05.
In the Westminster Middle School Invitational held in Atlanta, Beck Gregory took first place in the boys event with a six-dive score of 299.40.
The score reportedly broke the meet record previously held by Colquitt County’s Bo Bridges, who is now diving at the University of Georgia.
Selah Huante was third with a 215.65 and Landon Thomas was fourth with a 187.85.
All three represent Willie J. Williams Middle School.
The boys event drew nine divers.
Colquitt County took the top three places in the girls competition with Austin Leigh Taylor finishing first with a 266.95.
Amelia Gregory was second with a 266.90 and Ruby Demott was third with a 171.40.
Ansley Lane was seventh with a 148.65.
Taylor is an eighth-grader at Charlie A. Gray Junior High and Gregory, Demott and Lane are students at Willie J. Williams Middle School.
The girls competition drew 17 divers.
The Colquitt County divers also compete for Moss Farms Diving.
