MOULTRIE – A house fire has again plagued Fourth Avenue Southeast. It’s the second time firefighters have been called to the same area in just under two months.

On Oct. 28, around 9 p.m., the Moultrie Fire Department responded to a fire at 302 Fourth Ave. S.E. According to Moultrie Fire Chief Chad Kilgore the structure appeared to be vacant and the fire is under investigation.

Last month, Moultrie firefighters responded to two houses on fire, also on Fourth Avenue and also appearing to be vacant at the time of the fire.

According to Moultrie Fire Chief Chad Kilgore, the earlier fire started in an abandoned house and then spread to another abandoned house next door to it.

“The houses were so close together and there was so much fire in the one structure that it was inevitable that the house next door would also catch,” he said at the time.

Kilgore said, after investigation, the fire marshal told him that it was possible that vagrants had built a fire to cook and it had gotten out of control. However, he said, there was no way to confirm because of the extent of the damage to the structure.

 “It had been pretty obvious that some homeless people were staying there,” Kilgore said.

The most recent house to catch fire and one of the houses that had burned last month on Fourth Avenue were both listed on the qpublic.net website as belonging to an individual whose address was in the State of Washington.
