MOULTRIE – Once the Colquitt County girls basketball season begins, it likely won’t take long for Amareyia Knighton to become just the 10th Lady Packer ever to score 1,000 career points.
She has 975 heading into her senior season.
But until then, she is doing an outstanding job of helping lead the school’s flag football team to a successful start.
Knighton was a force on both sides of the line of scrimmage on Tuesday as the Lady Packers won their Division 4 Area 1 openers, defeating Thomas County Central 26-0 and Lowndes 13-12 on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The Lady Packers will try to build on the momentum of the two area victories when they travel to play three games on Saturday in the Southeast Bulloch tournament.
Colquitt will face Oconee County at 10:15 a.m.; host team Southeast Bulloch at 12:45 p.m.; and Dodge County at 2 p.m.
The combined record of the three teams Colquitt will face is 17-1. Oconee County is 9-1 and Southeast Bulloch and Dodge County are both 4-0.
And Southeast Bulloch, now playing its fourth season of flag football, has never lost a game. The Yellow Jackets are 66-0 since starting their program in 2021.
Since the start of the 2021 season, Dodge County is 46-10.
The trip will be a challenge for the Lady Packers, who are in their second season of competition.
Now 10-2, Colquitt has outscored its 12 opponents 213-82. The Lady Packers are 5-1 in front of the home fans, 3-0 on the road and 2-1 on neutral fields.
On Tuesday, Colquitt held Thomas County Central to just 66 total yards.
Mashayla Davis completed 10-of-18 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Ta’Meria Williams had two pass receptions for 10 yards and a touchdown.
Knighton had two catches for 24 yards and another score.
Davis and Jaelyn Wier each had a rushing touchdown.
But Knighton’s outstanding play was not confined to offense.
She was pulling flags everywhere, being credited with eight solo and one assisted tackle.
Cy’Mariya Bonner contributed a sack against the Lady Jackets, who fall to 3-3.
Colquitt rolled up 240 yards of offense against Lowndes and Davis again was on target, completing 10-of-19 passes for 115 yards and a scoring strike to Knighton, who had five catches for 95 yards.
Caylnn Singletary carried the football five times for 74 yards. She also had an interception.
Williams caught two passes for 11 yards and ran for the Lady Packers other touchdown.
Carolina Brown and Montana Tatum also had pass receptions.
Davis scored the winning extra point.
And Knighton again was dominant on defense, being credited with nine solo and one assisted tackle against the Vikettes, now 2-2.
